This surgical procedure is classified as a restrictive procedure, in that its aim is to reduce caloric intake by limiting how much food the stomach can hold. A silicone band is surgically placed around the stomach, and a port installed underneath the skin that allows the band to be adjusted via saline injections. The "lap" in "lap band" refers to a laparoscope, an imaging device used in the procedure that lets surgeons operate through small incisions in the abdomen. Among practitioners, it is considered one of the safer bariatric surgery procedures available.
